Boasting 12 megapixel resolution in a compact size, the new 4k lenses will be available on the market by the end of 2015.
Designed in the US and manufactured in Indonesia by a Japanese partner, the lenses will fit not only on box cameras, but also into dome and bullet cameras. They are perfect for use with both day and night cameras, says the manufacturer, thanks to excellent IR correction.
The new lenses are designed to resolve the 1.55 micron-sized pixel of the smaller 1/2.3 inch 4K sensors, while at the same time resolving the larger 1.85 micron pixels and covering the larger area of the 1/ 1.7 inch 4K image sensors.
“One of the specific advantages of those lenses that really distinguish us from our competitors is the size,” said Andrea Iniguez, Vice President of Business Development, adding that their products are “probably 50% smaller than our competitors’ 4k lenses available today.”
Theia’s new varifocal lenses will be able to cover a horizontal view field from 112 degrees to 9 degrees, with focal ranges of 4-10mm in Theia’s SL410 lens and 12-50mm in the Theia SL1250 lens.
Available configurations include:
motorised focus and zoom
IR cut filter
photo-interrupters
DC auto and P iris options
CS or D25 board mount versions
As well as all-manual functions
According to Iniguez, the final user will have “a higher resolution product that will provide a lot more detail in the images for better facial recognition and object identification.”
“The competition in the lens industry, with a proliferation of brands and models, is more and more intense, and this can often lead to great confusion for the consumer,” said Iniguez.
“Being able to actually use the power of high resolution cameras in video surveillance by pairing with equally high resolution optics is very exciting because it allows you to do many more tasks, for example to have better business intelligence.”
Research firm IHS has forecast revenues for surveillance cameras of 4MP and above to grow three times faster than average revenue growth across all network camera types over the next five years.
Says IHS senior market analyst Josh Woodhouse: “4K will be a major driving force for the high megapixel network camera market over the next few years. So full 4K resolution optics are a key part of the puzzle required to achieve true 4k-compliant video in surveillance systems.”
