To mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London ComparetheMarket.com have produced a video charting the city’s architectural rebirth.
And, re-enacting the Great Fire itself, a huge model of 17th century London was set alight on the river Thames on Sunday 4 September. Footage of that event can also be seen below.
The animated feature from ComparetheMarket.com shows the cost – in both contemporary and modern terms – of rebuilding the landmarks and countless other buildings destroyed in the flames.
The Great Fire of London is credited with giving birth to the UK insurance industry and ComparetheMarket.com has conducted a study of 2,000 Brits about home insurance. This revealed, among other things, that a majority – 54% – of Brits wouldn’t know what to do in the event of a fire.
The sheer scale and human cost of the 1666 fire is also illustrated in infographic form here.
