Whitepaper: Multi-residential access management – The move to digital

The ASSA ABLOY Group is the global leader in access solutions, with 48,500 employees and global sales totalling SEK 84bn.

The group is a dominant player in door openings, trusted identities and entrance automation in most of Europe, North America, South America, China and Oceania.

ASSA ABLOY solutions are widely deployed in a wide range of sectors, including commercial, social housing, education, transport, healthcare and leisure. ASSA ABLOY Group provides products and solutions in these areas, among many others:

Formed in 1994 from a de-merger of ASSA AB and guarding giant Securitas AB, the Swedish conglomerate acquired the second part of its moniker when Finnish lock manufacturer Abloy Oy was brought into the ASSA stable shortly afterwards. Some of the access-control industry’s most notable innovations can be traced to the Scandinavian pioneers, with Abloy founder Emil Henriksson inventing the disc tumbler lock mechanism for instance.

Drawing on its Scandinavian heritage, the brand has thrived as much for the aesthetic appeal of its products as their functionality. ASSA ABLOY has been named among the World’s 100 Most Innovative Companies 2018 by Forbes.

ASSA ABLOY has made more than 200 acquisitions since its formation more than two decades ago. The group includes Traka, HID Global, Ameristar, Yale and Pickersgill Kaye among many others. Recent acquisitions at the time of writing include UK-based door sealing systems manufacturer Lorient, Swiss entrance systems firm Agta Record and Australian commercial door manufacturer Spence Doors.

The company provides a useful BIM Objects Portal, from where architects and specifiers can download BIM models to help them meet the growing demand for BIM building practices.

ASSA ABLOY is a fixture at top security trade shows around the world, including Essen in Germany and IFSEC International in London in June.

ASSA ABLOY Digital and Access Solutions EMEA

ASSA ABLOY’s digital and access solutions portfolio includes electronic locks and ecosystems designed to meet the needs of commercial premises of any size or type.

Aperio® wireless access control technology allows a variety of access control providers to cost-effectively integrate non-wired doors with mechanical locks into new and legacy access control systems. Doors need only be equipped with battery-powered Aperio locks, together with RFID readers, and linked to the access control system via a communications hub for online integration, or via update on card for offline integration.

ASSA ABLOY says that security and facility managers can therefore readily and quickly respond to organisational changes. Managing the system is also simplified since only a single security system needs monitoring and users require just one RFID access control card to navigate the building or site.

The CLIQ® mechatronic locking system, which is powered by a battery inside the programmable key, provides flexible access and wireless key management solutions for all kinds of locking applications.

Comprising high-end microelectronics, programmable keys and cylinders, CLIQ can meet a range of security and access requirements, with a variety of mechanical and electronic systems combinations available.

Each key can be programmed and updated individually to permit access to specific areas at specific times and dates. This means security and facilities teams can respond quickly and flexibly to ever-shifting access requirements.

SMARTair represents a major leap forward from mechanical keys in terms of security, flexibility and convenience. Pitched as a cost-effective alternative to a full, high-security system, SMARTair is a wireless access control solution designed for small to medium sized businesses. Wireless doors are generally considered to be more cost-effective than traditional wired doors.

A lost card is much cheaper and quicker to replace than a key, something customers tend to recognise in their procurement decisions. Should cards be lost then SMARTair™ access control doors can be reprogrammed, avoiding the costly and disruptive replacement of locks and cylinders.

The most recent addition to the line-up, Code Handle® is pitched by ASSA ABLOY as “the cost-effective, hassle-free way to protect private rooms from public access.” Whether it’s the storeroom in a shop or pharmacy, or the toilet for staff use only, private doors in a public-facing space cannot practically be watched round the clock by security and facilities staff.

Code Handle is designed to be simple to install, with a built-in PIN-pad that locks the door automatically. An electronic PIN code ensures that only staff and other authorised people can unlock the door.

With no wiring or other substantive changes to your door needed, ASSA ABLOY says it is inexpensive compared to alternative access control systems.
