Security and fire installation business, Amalgamated, celebrates 50th anniversary

While it’s a challenging time across for businesses across the board at the moment, we report on a positive news story of security and fire installation business, Amalgamated, celebrating a significant milestone in its history this year.

On the 4th of May 2020, Amalgamated will officially become 50 years old. In 1970 the company was founded by Geoff Teader in Manchester under the name of ‘Amalgamated Fire Alarm Company’ and in 1993 was renamed ‘Amalgamated Ltd’. Throughout its history, the company has expanded across several fire and security disciplines, including Emergency Lighting, Fire Fighting Equipment, CCTV, Door Access and Intruder Alarms.

Amalgamated-Businessowners-20Building up to the 50th Anniversary, several events took place that brought the company forward and paved the way to its successful future. Geoff Teader, former Managing Director and current Chairman of Amalgamated, received the ECA Centenary Award in 2001, the Ian Marsh Award in 2015 for his contribution to the industry, the ECA Local Service Award in 2016 and the FSA Certificate of Appreciation in 2018. In 2016, Geoff’s son, Ian, was appointed Managing Director and Geoff took up the position of the Chairman. In the same year, the business won the ECA Contractor of the Year Award in the £1-£5 million turnover category.

The construction industry itself is one that has certainly changed throughout the years. As part of this, Geoff, who is also a member of the FESS/Trailblazer National Committee – works with the committee to create a Government-approved apprenticeship unique to the fire and security industry. Training within the construction industry has always been available but has never been structured in such a way to allow easy progress and development to help the industry grow. This national trailblazer initiative has created a well-defined and well-structured training apprenticeship for people wanting a career within the industry.

Another way in which the organisation has navigated its way through the changing industry is reflected in the company’s strategy to acquire all the necessary accreditations and memberships to demonstrate excellence. Amalgamated is ISO9001, ISO14001, OHSAS 45000 and across all of its disciplines accredited by the SSAIB. It also holds Constructionline Gold and CHAS accreditations and is a member of ECA, NICEIC, FSA, British Safety Council, ROSPA and FIA. Furthermore, the company holds an Investors-In-People (IIP) Accreditation as it is committed to its employees, as well as the overall delivery of service. Throughout the years, Amalgamated Ltd has also undertaken several charitable actions throughout their 50 years of operation, either via donating used equipment or supporting large mental health organisations.

More recently, in 2019, the company moved to new headquarters in the M60 Office Park, Swinton. The new office is part of a business complex and has an open plan arrangement that encourages collaborative working and communication among the employees. Following the company’s commitment to the protection of the environment, the office is energy-efficient and a great way for the organisation to continue its success in the future.

Overall, Amalgamated views the past 50 years of operation as a great achievement and, the business says it is looking forward to continuing its growth with the industry, providing its services, and maintaining its ethos and commitment to customer satisfaction.
