Tech tips: dormakaba access control solutions

Here, Andrew Slynn, Electronic Access and Data Lead at dormakaba, answers some of the most commonly asked questions dormakaba engineers receive regarding access control solutions.

How are we going to lock this door?

dormakaba-AccessControl-20Whilst this may seem obvious, this is always the first question on any project.

For large scale, high-end, or high-level security requirements, there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution, so it is important for us to understand the entire scheme and the objectives, before making recommendations. In these instances, myself or other dormakaba engineers will visit the site to assess the project and establish the requirements.

There are a number of factors to consider, including the amount of use the door will be subjected to, the levels of access required, the type of doors and more. Once we know the scope, scale and objectives from the client, we can then make recommendations for a solution that suits all parties.

Can we use electronic access control on a fire escape door?

Quite simply, yes!

dormakaba offers a range of electronic access solutions that can be applied into the fire door system, such as integrating systems with intercom and alarm options. Of course, these systems are certified to BS EN 14648, CE Marked, and certified by an independent third-party fire protection approvals scheme. This is required by law and complies with current fire safety regulations.

How do we fit access control to glass doors?

Glass doors are a popular choice, particularly for office and corporate spaces – they take up minimal space and create light, airy, pleasant working environments. Recent innovations in glass manufacturing means that glass can be used as a robust and safe option, specified to withstand force such as vandalism or even blast attacks.

The type of access control applied to glass doors is determined by the purpose of the door. For example, for internal doors, manual glass sliding door systems provide a versatile and elegant appearance as these maximise the floor space between rooms, when compared with a swing door system – providing a smooth transition from one room to another.

For swing doors, dormakaba recommends a ‘pinch free’ system. This is where the pivot point of the swing door is close to the glass edge, to minimise the risk of trapping fingers in the opening gap between the glass door and frame.

We recognise the importance of supplying security and access solutions that require minimal adjustments to the glass. Carefully considered systems should only require simple cut-out holes designed for optimum clamping efficiency. This protects the integrity of the glass whilst ensuring a robust security solution.

How do we connect smart locks?

Technology has made some incredible strides in recent years, with systems improving significantly over time. The majority of these systems now run on Cloud-based systems with a centralised, online platform complete with user friendly User Interface (UI) to manage all user profiles and access privileges with efficiency.

Using an internet system, we can easily provide our customers with everything they need in order to move security to these cloud-based systems.

Due to their flexible nature, these cloud-based systems can allow users to set up access rights to different groups or specific people to certain areas of a building, even at certain times, effectively creating a ‘zoned’ security system. User access can easily be changed remotely, to add, withdraw or amend access rights to adapt to changing scenarios, such as in the event of a lost fob, card or key.

Furthermore, these systems have a full audit trail function, meaning they can record the movements of users to allow complete traceability and peace of mind. This is particularly beneficial in the event of evacuation to ensure all occupants are safely out of the building and accounted for.

Can you use your phone to open smart locks?

Yes! This is an increasingly popular and attractive option to both hoteliers, and private residential owners.

Smart locks use RFID (Radio-frequency identification) technology for traditional methods of identification – such as using key fobs or access cards. This means the technology can work alongside smartphones and other handheld devices. This is a great way to help ensure a building remains secure, as people are less likely to forget their personal mobile device or loan it to someone else.

This type of access is often an attractive option for hoteliers looking to enhance their guest experience. Guests can install the relevant app, check-in online, and then use their smart device to access their room by skipping the check-in desk, meaning they can enjoy their stay with less hassle and more flexibility.

Can you install smart locks on any door?

As mentioned, the type of lock will depend on a number of factors, to ensure security remains the top priority whilst meeting customer objectives and aesthetic requirements.

Thankfully, smart locks are extremely versatile, especially wireless locks that utilise RFID and these are incredibly easy to retrofit. For end clients, this means our engineers are on-site for less time, with minimal disruption.

What infrastructure would I need to make it work?

This depends on the scope and scale of the security requirements. Smart access systems are hugely versatile and offer a wealth of benefits for a range of sectors, but there are many other options available that might be a better solution for your scheme.

The best way to ensure the most suitable end-to-end solution, is to engage with us at the earliest stages of the project as possible. dormakaba is able to work directly, or with contract suppliers, to visit the site, assess design drawings to plan and work closely with stakeholders to ensure the best solution. Our services also include bespoke, engineered solutions, including prototyping and CAD design options, to create the perfect, complete solution.
