Edesix celebrates record year for major contract wins

Edesix, a supplier of body worn camera (BWC) systems, says 2016 was its best-ever year for winning new business, winning major contracts in both fire and security, in the UK and internationally.

We recently reported on the fact that the Edinburgh-based company is now the official body-worn camera provider for Her Majesty’s Prison Service throughout England, Wales, Scotland and, most recently, Northern Ireland.

The company now counts police forces in Northern Ireland and Scotland, as well as South Australia and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, as clients.

BWCs are seen as delivering more transparent, more accountable law enforcement. A Cambridge University study that tracked 2,000 officers in the UK and US showed that complaints by members of the public against officers fell by 93% over a 12-month period.

In 2015 we reported that bodyworn cameras had inspired UK police forces to consider interrogating suspects at crime scenes instead of at the police station.

Following a trial at 10 fire stations in Birmingham in 2016, Edesix’s BWCs are being rolled out among firefighters in the west Midlands, with 80 of Edesix’s Videobadges deployed in early 2017 for learning and development purposes.

Wearable cameras are increasingly seen as an indispensable tool for police services and Edesix has been expanding its customer base across various law enforcement agencies and emergency services, as well as internationally.

In 2016 Edesix’s software VideoManager was also integrated with Genetec Inc’s software-based security platform for managing different security operations, from access control to license plate recognition, which can manage, support and store data from wearable cameras at the city-wide level.

Richie McBride, managing director at Edesix, said: “Body worn video and video workflow has become a key component within many sectors, including the emergency services, security, prisons, and parking, providing a greater awareness and accountability of events for its users.”

It is also now becoming increasingly commonplace to use BWC’s for identifying best practice to enhance training and learning development, according to McBride.
