Fire safety in construction

FPA to host seminar on fire safety implications of modern construction methods

Dame Judith Hackitt’s Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety made recommendations for the prescribed use of building information modelling (BIM) systems in construction.

BIM can help building owners and occupiers understand the nature and style of construction used and safety systems installed.

FPA is hosting a one-day seminar on the fire safety implications of modern building construction technology on Wednesday 26 September.

This event will identify widely used methods and materials in housing, retail, education, health and warehouse premises; address the drivers for favouring one method or material over another – be it speed, cost, environmental impact etc; explore challenges during construction and risks when the building is in use; and how buildings can be made more energy efficient without compromising fire protection standards.

The course takes place Wednesday 26 September between 10:00-16:00 at the Fire Service College, Gloucestershire.

Programme

Modern materials and methods of construction: fire safety pros and cons of each, fire safety challenges associated with construction and use, current legislation, suitability of codes of practice and guidance to today’s common build techniques. Jonathan O’Neill, FPA managing director.

Modern construction methods and materials used on:

  • Masonry Aircreate systems
  • Glulam and cross laminated timber (CLT)
  • Light steel
  • Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)
