"exacting standards"

New global fire safety coalition backed by Sherwin-Williams

Fire protection coatings manufacturer Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings is backing an ambitious new initiative set up to develop common fire safety standards in buildings.

With members including The World Bank and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, The International Fire Safety Standards (IFSS) Coalition will set and reinforce minimum requirements professionals should follow in the event of a fire.

The IFSS argues that the growing volume of cross-border investments in the property market helps account for an absence of high level global standards around fire safety risks in design, construction and management of buildings.

After developing international standards – to be owned by the IFSS rather than any single body – the IFSS Coalition will work with professionals around the world to deliver them locally. The coalition will create a standards setting committee, composed of top international technical fire experts, to develop the details and ensure they are fit for purpose across global markets.

“We wholeheartedly support this initiative to improve the standards for fire safety across the board from design through the fire engineering process,” said Bob Glendenning, global fire engineering manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings. “With our own developments in technology and science, we are continually looking at ways of improving product specification to meet the most exacting of standards.”

Members of the IFSS Coalition include:

  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
  • Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE)
  • Local Authority Building Control (LABC)
  • Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
  • British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM)
  • Singapore Institute of Building (SIBL)
  • Australian Property Institute (API)
  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)
  • The World Bank

Sherwin-Williams has supplied its diverse range of fire protection coatings to landmark construction and engineering projects including London’s The Shard, Azerbaijan’s Flame Towers and London’s Leadenhall Building, also known as The ‘Cheesegrater’.
