Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

5 Stories From the Fire Industry Last Week

1. Concern over fire door defects prompts new inspection training course

BRE has developed a fire door inspection training course, which has been piloted by Local Authority Building Control (LABC) members. The course includes an examination that will enable building control surveyors who pass the test to be registered as Accredited Fire Door Assessors.

2. Parliamentary seminar organized by the ASFP

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) is to hold a seminar at the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 4 December in conjunction with the All Party Parliamentary Fire Safety and Rescue Group and the Fire Sector Federation. “Understanding Fire Safety in Buildings” will consider issues that affect fire safety within the modern built environment and investigate how to ensure that appropriate fire protection is designed, specified, installed, and maintained throughout a building’s life.

3. Worrying new fire risk in timber-framed buildings

In a demonstration at a recent Fire Protection Association (FPA) open day, the Association’s technical director, Dr. Jim Glockling, showed how quickly a plastic “air brick” (commonly used in timber-framed houses) can catch fire using nothing more than a cigarette lighter. The FPA is now working closely with the UK Timber Frame Association, the Chief Fire Officers Association, the Health & Safety Executive, and the British Standards Institute to address this issue.

4. Manchester firefighters set to receive specialist training

Fifty-four firefighters in the Greater Manchester area are to receive specialist training to become part of a new response and rescue team. The Technical Response Unit (TRU) will have unique skills allowing them to carry out special tasks at emergency incidents throughout the county, while an on-call team will be at hand to respond to events both nationwide and on an international basis. They will form part of the Urban Search and Rescue and UK International Search and Rescue units.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s motivation to train these firefighters is the changing risk climate. Increasingly, the organization now has to deal with non-fire related incidents (among them road traffic accidents, machinery rescues, terrorist threats, and collapsed building searches).

5. FBU, CFOA, and fire minister focus on Fire Sector Summit 2013

Representatives from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), as well as fire minister Brandon Lewis, will be speaking at the Fire Sector Summit 2013 on Thursday 24 October at Whittlebury Hall under the themes of sustainability, innovation, and direction.

John Humphreys is set to host a panel discussion in which the FBU, CFOA, and the minister debate the state of the industry in the wake of recent firefighter strike action. Last weekend, further planned industrial action by the FBU was cancelled.

The Fire Sector Summit 2013 also hosts a series of workshops on topics including false alarms and the Knight Review.
