Firefighters in England and Wales are on strike in a dispute over pensions. We visited the London Fire Brigade’s headquarters in central London just after 12 noon when firefighters were scheduled to walk out across the country.

It is sad that is has come down to this but hopefully it will be resolved quickly and full service be restored. I am the son of a union worker and can tell you from experience that the families of striking workers can carry a lot of the weight of these kinds of actions, so I would ask that everyone support the families of these workers as well. Not necessarily by money but emotionally it can be a trying time.

My dad was also a union worker and you are absolutely right. These guys and their families need as much support as they can get. Sad it had to come to a strike!

Good point, JonathonL, often the forgotten people in such disputes. This could be the beginning of a bigger dispute, but hopefully not.
