FIREX welcomes the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group – Dedicated seminar sessions for housing association and local authorities to attend

With fire safety in social housing now a major area of discussion in the national agenda, FIREX is delighted to welcome the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group (NSHFSG) and its members to this year’s show at ExCeL. Based on the Aico stand FI2020, the group will welcome all members to the show as well as anyone with a professional interest in ensuring social housing assets are fully compliant and safe environments for their occupants.

FireSafetyHousing-logoThere will be opportunities to attend conference sessions in the ExCeL South Gallery Suites 15 and 16 on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th May. The key topics under discussion will include the future of IOT, standards competency and technology, how regulations and standards are setting the bar, translating policy into safer outcomes and, most importantly, what does leadership and collaboration look like.

On Wednesday 18th May at 14:15 Andy Frankum, Chair of the NSHFSG, will also be hosting a seminar in the Expertise & Guidance Theatre on the show floor. The session is titled, The social housing sector – What are the challenges in improving fire safety standards? and is free to attend for all FIREX visitors.

Social housing will play a major role in FIREX this year, with the seminar sessions in the Expertise & Guidance Theatre focusing on many relevant areas, such as the digitisation of the golden thread, IoT in fire safety, controlled evacuation and the impact of legislative changes to the Fire Safety Order. In addition, there will be a wealth of new relevant technologies from leading manufacturers such as C-TEC, Hochiki, Aico, Fireco, Kentec, Vimpex and GERDA, plus a major showstopper from EVACSTAC.

This is a two-way panel discussion with members of the NSHFSG Executive on what is required. NSHFSG has formulated a model consisting of Standards, Competence, Technology, Operational Delivery and Culture – and the group wants to know your thoughts. This is a great opportunity to ask the executive panel questions on anything fire related. One not to miss!

Are the current regulations, and standards fit for purpose, and do we need them to hold ourselves accountable, or do they need to be more sector-led and self-regulated?

This session will explore how standards are formed and produced, whether the sector is ready for self-regulation, what the current barriers are, and who should be involved in developing standards in the future. How do we incorporate technical advances into standards and regulations?

How do we, as a sector, bring our policies to life to develop safer homes for the resident we serve? How are we engaging residents through the journey to ensure that feel and are kept safe?

This session will explore what good practices exist within the sector, whether compliance delivers on this, how greater consistency can be achieved and how that might be measured.

An in-depth look into the state of fire safety in the social housing sector, and the key challenges involved with engaging with residents and responsible persons.

What does leadership and collaborative working look like in the future?

What and where does this leadership need to come from? Does it necessarily need to be a Chief Executive or Leader of a Council or does it sit with everyone involved including the supply chain?

This session will explore what good leadership is, what collaborative working looks like, and explore whether a model-based system could help to encourage safer outcomes.
