EAPFP members gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania, 23-24 May
The European Association for Passive Fire Protection (EAPFP) is calling for mandatory third-party certification of passive fire protection installers.
During the association’s latest biannual meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, EAPFP members discussed several initiatives underway across Europe designed to enhance installer training and encourage certification.
UK, Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands have introduced training programmes for passive fire protection installers while formal certification and registration schemes are being introduced in Ireland, Denmark and Slovakia, which has also launched a pilot project around the mandatory approval of installed fire-rated constructions.
Set out in the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations in 2014, Ireland is planning to make registration of all main and specialist sub-contractors mandatory in coming months. The most profound changes are expected in the UK, where the Grenfell fire that claimed 71 lives has prompted the government to commission an independent review of building regulations and an independent public inquiry.
“Having identified poor installation as a key area of concern across Europe, EAPFP members are now sharing best practice as they develop training and certification schemes which aim to ensure installation quality improves throughout the built environment,” said EAPFP President Joric Witlox.
“The EAPFP is now actively campaigning for the certification and registration of installers to be mandatory across Europe and calls on all passive fire protection installers to undergo formal training. As a minimum, installers are encouraged to join a third party certification scheme and the EAPFP will campaign for membership of such schemes to be mandatory.”
The EAPFP counts among its members national associations across Europe representing manufacturers, contractors and other institutions involved in passive fire protection.
