Top 50 influencers in security & fire 2017: Security management, education and thought leadership

After extensive consultation with a panel of judges from across the industry, we are delighted to reveal our roll call of the Top 50 influencers in security & fire 2017: Security management, education and thought leadership (UK and international).

You can meet and greet with some of the influencers over drinks at IFSEC International 2017, held in association with the BSIA. This networking event takes place between 14:30-15:30 in the Security Management Theatre on day three, 22 June. IFSEC takes place at London ExCeL between 20-22 June 2017. Get your free badge now.

The BSIA is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It’s a trio of 50s because we’ve also designed a graphic featuring all influencers based on the cover of the Beatles’ seminal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, which also celebrated its 50th anniversary last month.

We’ve also added a special ‘lifetime of influence’ tribute in recognition of the enormous contribution to the industry of Mike Tennent, founder of Tavcom Training, who sadly passed away last month.

Among the judges for this category was James Willison BA, MA, MSyI. A big thanks to James, a security convergence and ESRM specialist and founder of Unified Security Ltd, for his insightful and substantial contribution. James is speaking, with Sarb Sembhi of Virtually Informed, on 20 June at IFSEC International 2017 about ‘How vendors can support ESRM and CSM strategies’ between 14:00-14:40 in the Borders & Infrastructure Theatre. The next day (21 June) he is presenting, alongside Steven Kenny of Axis Communications, on ‘What security managers need to know about cybersecurity’, between 13:30-13:55 in the Security Management Theatre. Willison and Sembhi have co-written a white paper on the same subject that you can download here.

#5 tony porter

5. Tony Porter (CCTV Commissioner), Surveillance Camera Commissioner, UK government

A regular in our most-influential countdown since becoming Surveillance Camera Commissioner in March 2014, Tony Porter is responsible for the evolution and promotion of the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.

The code provides guidance to businesses, government and local authorities on the deployment of CCTV systems. Porter’s remit includes encouraging compliance, reviewing the code’s effectiveness, advising ministers and providing relevant information to the general public and system operators about the effective, appropriate, proportionate and transparent use of surveillance camera systems.

He brings a wealth of business and law enforcement expertise to the role. An intelligence specialist (most recently within the financial sector) and retired senior police leader, Porter’s experience spans community and business engagement, international counter-terrorism and serious and organised crime.
Porter has pulled no punches in his analysis of the industry’s shortcomings in deploying CCTV. Speaking to BBC News in 2015, he said too many organisations and local authorities failed to conduct annual reviews as prescribed by the code of practice. This was despite the potentially huge savings: one West Midlands local authority reduced the number of ineffective cameras and saved £250,000 following its audit. “You can still maintain the balance of excellent surveillance but not have a propagation of surveillance that is actually useless,” said Porter. “Surveillance can be an extremely good thing and run well, it’s a useful tool for society. But to quote a former information commissioner, ‘we should not sleepwalk into a surveillance society’.”

#10 grant lecky

10. Grant Lecky, Security Partners’ Forum

Amiable and supremely well connected in the security industry – not just in Canada but internationally too – Grant Lecky has been influential in connecting disparate disciplines in the security industry.

Speaking to CSO in 2013 he reflected on his decision to co-found – with #1 influencer in this list Bonnie Butlin – the Canadian Security Partners’ Forum (CSPF) in 2011. “I kept hearing that the industry is fragmented. People don’t know how to find other experts in security in Canada,” says Lecky. “There was no means to connect people. There was no body of knowledge.”

A year after its birth, the organization already had 80 association members and the model has been emulated elsewhere in the world. “We’re a friend to the associations,” he continued. “In some cases, we are a magnifier for them. People have their associations, but they also have the forum to tap into and share best practices. It’s about cross pollination and making security [and] public safety more professional.”

Lecky is also co-founder of the Canadian Cybersecurity Alliance and has held various Corporate Security, Resilience and Intelligence-related positions for the Government of Canada.

He has a Corporate Security Executive Master Class Certificate from the Burrill Green Corporate Security Business School and an MSc in Security & Risk Management from the University of Leicester.

“I don’t like being bored,” Lecky has also said. “The reward right now is a job well done. I’m furiously stubborn. If there’s something I feel needs to be done, I will just go and do it.”
