CES 2018
WATCH: The fire safety innovations on show at CES 2018
From a multi-sensor that harnesses machine learning to “the first connected smoke sensor without an optical chamber,” here’s a quick rundown of the fire-safety innovations on show at the world’s largest consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
LifeDoor
Integated with smoke detectors, LifeDoor automatically closes interior doors in your home when fire or smoke is detected.
Fire doors – when closed of course – protect occupants from smoke and toxic gases and starve the fire of the room’s oxygen.
LifeDoor also illuminates the room so the occupant can navigate their way out of the building if fire breaks out after dark.
Also initiates a second audio alarm optimised for the hearing frequencies of children. A study found that 80% of children aged between 3-12 sleep through standard smoke alarms.
Inirv React
Did I leave the oven on? The human memory is notoriously unreliable, even if in this scenario your worries prove to be unfounded in 99% of cases. This device from Inirv gives you peace of mind for the 99% and protects you from an expensive gas bill or – worse still – a fire breaking out in your kitchen, for the remaining 1%.
A smoke and gas sensor is installed on your ceiling and you connect the knobs on your traditional, non-digital oven to four knob controls, which turn the oven or hobs off if gas or smoke is detected.
OneLink Safe and Sound
An entertainment as well as a safety device, Safe & Sound combines a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector with a 10W speaker and Amazon Alexa. The voice-controlled speaker has Alexa Voice services built-in to provide access to Amazon echo features.
Noertek 2Gig Stove & Grill Guard
Sends an alert to your smartphone when the oven knob is turned from the off position. The unit communicates via 345 Mhz radio technology.
“Stove & Grill Guard offers opportunities for dealers and integrators to provide added value to their customers, and in a part of the home not previously associated with smart technology,” says Jim Poder, VP of product development at Nortek Security & Control.
“Stove & Grill Guard also opens the door to a new world of senior living and aging-in-place services, providing protection for property and occupants, and peace of mind for caregivers and family members.”
NodOn EYE
Comprising no fewer than 11 patents, the NodOn EYE is a chamber-less smoke detector that eliminates false alarms and samples smoke before it even reaches the detector. When the infrared LED reports an obstruction, the blue LED signals whether the obstruction is actually smoke or not. The EYE distinguishes between types of smoke and fumes.
