State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

COUNTER TErROR in crowded places

Watch: The burgeoning market for crash-tested street furniture and perimeter protection

A spate of terror attacks deploying vehicles as weapons – not to mention the perennial risk of drunk, reckless or unconscious drivers veering off the road – has underlined the need for wider deployment of physical barriers in public spaces.

As well as crash-testing perimeter protection, manufacturers must balance affordability, flexibility, visual appeal and, to accommodate the diverse needs of customers, versatility. From seats to planters and litter bins, sometimes these barriers can even double as street furniture.

We recently surveyed our readership, comprising architects, security professionals and others who might procure physical barriers for their organisations, public spaces or one-off events, on the topic. The video below provides some insights into the report’s findings.

Sponsored by hard landscaping manufacturer and street furniture specialist Marshalls, Aesthetically pleasing, crash-tested street furniture: why functional will no longer do covers the following:

  • Procurement trends
  • The importance of aesthetics when balanced with cost and security
  • Perception of products already on the market
  • What kind of products respondents would like to see on the market
