FIFA World Cup 2018

HID Global lands exclusive deal to be official ticket producer for FIFA World Cup 2018

HID Global, the identities solution provider part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, has been chosen to provide cutting-edge technology to prevent counterfeiting and forgery at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

World Cup ‘smart’ tickets will be fitted with a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, which makes them different from the usual barcoded tickets, which can be more easily copied. Data stored in the ticket’s RFID chip will be encrypted and digitally signed.

Tapping their tickets to a reader to validate them, attendees will pass through entrances more rapidly than with barcoded tickets – a logistical and safety boon for high-volume events.

HID Global, a premier partner at IFSEC 2018 in June, will produce more than three million secure RFID tickets for 64 matches held in 11 host cities of the Russian Federation between 14 June to 15 July 2018.

RFID technology transmits the unique identity of a ticket via radio waves and because they do not need a line of sight, attendees can tap their tickets to a reader to gain access to the event.

The production of illegal tickets is always a concern at large scale events. FIFA has issued a warning to remind all ticket buyers to be careful and that any unauthorised tickets not purchased from the official FIFA World Cup website will be cancelled.

HID Global has also provided pre-personalisation, fulfilment, consignment and delivery services, as well as middleware and a key management system dedicated to the event cycle, including libraries for device key management.

“HID Global is providing FIFA with a formidable defence against ticket fraud and simplifying the process of a fan’s picking a ticket and using it to tap and go into the stadium,” said Stefan Widing, President and CEO of HID Global.

“We’re confident that this RFID solution, along with the other advanced ticket security features, will give FIFA and attendees an extra level of security and a better overall FIFA World Cup experience.”

HID Global is exhibiting at, and is a premier partner of, IFSEC International, 19-21 June 2018, ExCeL London. You can find them on stand F310.
