IFSEC Global influencers 2018: Security thought leadership

After consultation with a panel of highly respected judges, we’re delighted to reveal the IFSEC Global influencers 2018 – security thought leadership category.

The roll call of influencers across the security and fire industries is broken down into seven categories – which you can click on below to reveal the final rankings.

We defined ‘influence’ in the following ways:

  • Someone who has played a key role in driving technological innovation
  • Someone who has been a driving force in changing regulationstandards/guidance or best practice
  • Someone whose insights/opinions are widely respected and which are influential in shaping debate around industry issues
  • Someone who has been instrumental in the success of the organisation or business they lead or are employed by
  • Someone who has helped to raise the industry’s profile or been an influential voice in the national media

We’d like to thank Grant Lecky, co-founder of the Security Partners Forum, for his tireless efforts as lead judge. Lecky, who himself featured in IFSEC Global’s list of top influencers in 2014 and 2017, appointed the panel of judges (which you can also view below) and coordinated the nominations and judging process. Thanks also to Bonnie Butlin, also co-founder of the Security Partners Forum and number one in last year’s international thought leader rankings, for helping to coordinate the process.

You can network with some of the influencers during a meet-and-greet session during IFSEC International, 19-21 June 2018, ExCeL London – between 4-5pm on Wednesday 20 June in the ASIS Lounge.

Her words on the main challenges in her field for Bluenote: “I think collaboration with external companies, organisations and people is the only way we can win the battle against cybercrime and fraud. I think we need to work harder and more creatively to make security easy, seamless and understandable to the general public. Rowena Fell -EY

6. Rowena Fell EY

Her nomination: “One of the most dedicated, professional and personable individuals I have come across. Her approach to security and threat is always refreshing and she is one of those individuals who silences a room when she speaks. Her drive and determination to go that little bit extra, sets her apart from many of her peers (and superiors) and what I loved was her ability to get the best out of a close knit and often multinational team and frequently in very difficult and dangerous circumstances.

“When she worked for me she was responsible for facility, personnel and asset protection, interpreting and implementing a raft of different security policies that frequently have to be redefined to meet local conditions. She has taken that experience and driven it into better practice in the corporate world. She has had to liaise with many security organisations and agencies to ensure an overall coordinated approach to dealing with complex and challenging threats.

“She always has a fingertip understanding of the mandated processes, complex legal frameworks and freedom of interpretation that she must work under. Her work, judgement, advice, tenacity protected thousands of multinational military and civilian personnel on bases in hostile environments and in a peacetime location over 30 sites in many European countries. She never let me down.

“I have had the pleasure of working with her during her time at EY as I have introduced some organisations and sought her thoughts and advice on complex issues. I have also included her in select round table discussions where individuals at Chief Security Officer level with large organisations have debated many current issues. Rowena holds a room with her depth of thought, confident arguments and logical thinking. I have had several people mention privately that they wished she was on their team.

“Delivering in work is never enough for Rowena and that is why she helped found the Women’s Security Society (which I am a member), promoting gender equality in the industry and is an active member of ASIS and The Security Institute and is active with other professional events. She recognises the value of being part of the right networks and many of those networks which I work closely with, all recognise the value she adds, she has a strong reputation across many industry verticals. Now is the time for the industry to recognise her contribution.”

Gavin Jones BRE UK

3. Gavin Jones BRE UK

His nomination in full: “Although classically trained as a mechanical and fire engineer, in 2009 Gavin Jones started to work in the security industry in the UAE. While employed at the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, he was instrumental in the development of the Abu Dhabi Safety and Security Planning Manual, the legislation and guidance that required security to be an integral part of every new development in the Emirate. This innovative manual was awarded the Security Excellence Award in 2014 for the category of International Achievement, and its use to secure the three high profile museums on Saadiyat Island received the award for the Counter Terror Solution of the Year, the first time it had been awarded to a planning process rather than a CT product.

“On his return to the UK, Gavin Jones did not sit on his laurels, commencing work at BRE UK. There he set about developing a security risk management process, mirroring the strengths and successes of the BREEAM system for sustainability. Towards the end of 2017 this was translated into SABRE, the first and only global security risk management standard for the built environment, which can be applied to projects in design, construction and live operations.

“Until now, there has been no way for a client to determine ‘what good security looks like’, or to determine the effectiveness of their security risk management processes. Security consultants have been able to deliver to their own standards, rather than to a global standard subject to third party review. While some have performed admirably during that time, the standard for others has fallen short, leaving clients exposed and with security strategies and systems that are not fit for purpose. SABRE has the potential to resolve many of these issues and could revolutionise the security industry. While some in the industry are fearful of its introduction, many organisations (including senior government planners, police and security organisations) view this as the methodology to help raise standards across the board, to bring together single element processes such as Secured By Design and Park Mark into a much wider, more encompassing, effective standard to guide and assess security risk management in the built environment.

“This standard is new and innovative, it has never been attempted by any other leading private or public security organization and the end product is well thought out and technically sound. Furthermore, as it is based on the BREEAM system for sustainability, developers and clients should be able to understand its foundation, which may help with its introduction and growth. SABRE, once fully adopted, will change the scope of works for security consultants, will raise the standards of those involved in the development of security designs for the built environment and will ultimately result in higher levels of security assurance to the senior business decision makers.”
