Indian Government Appoints Gulshan Rai as Cyber Security Chief at PMO

Gulshan RaiThe Narendra Modi government has created a cyber-security wing in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and has appointed Gulshan Rai as its chief.

Rai has been named as the special secretary for cyber-security. He was earlier heading the computer emergency response team at the department of electronics and information technology (DeitY).

Rai has been working since 1998 in the field evolving legal framework to address issues arising out of cyberspace.

He is also expected to head the national cyber coordination centre (NCCC) that the government is also setting up with a budget of Rs 1,000 crore.

He was also supposed to become the first national cyber security coordinator.

The country has been exposed to several cyber security threats where incidents of data/ information breaches are increasing rapidly.

Attacks on the Indian website have increased nearly five times in the past four years.

According to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team more than 60,000 incidents were recorded until mid-2014.
