IFSEC Speaker Q&A: Alcatel-Lucent’s Paul Adams on Transforming Public Safety with Smart Technologies

paul adams‘Transforming Public Safety with Smart Technologies and Secure Infrastructure’ is a presentation being delivered by Alcatel-Lucent’s director of strategic marketing, Paul Adams, at IFSEC 2015.

Taking place in the Safe Cities Academy, the presentation will explore the potential offered by scalable and secure network infrastructures as a catalyst for change and service enablement.

Adams will also discuss:

  • How better use of technology can help cities reduce crime rates, improve incident response and enhance investigations
  • First responder needs for critical applications based on wearable technology enablement trends
  • Smart technology and secure infrastructure public safety examples and customer success stories

Adams warmed up for his presentation by answering a few questions on smart cities for IFSEC Global.

IFSEC Global: Would you class London as a leading safe city?

Paul Adams: I think London can probably be regarded as a safe city, overall.

As we know, UK inhabitants have the highest levels of monitoring anywhere in the world, and despite our grudging acceptance of CCTV in our lives, that provides a blanket of security, although those cameras have a lower pixel quality to most smartphones!

IG: How can London’s authorities make the capital even safer?

PA: A greater integration of systems and sharing of information.  And maybe better cameras!

IG: What are the biggest challenges posed by IoT – increasingly now labelled the ‘internet of everything’ – to security and public safety in our cities?

PA: The volume of data. Without the big data analytics it will all be for nothing.

And a lack of understanding, at the consumer level, of how internet-connected devices can be exploited. How often do you check the virus definitions on your connected fridge?

IG: What will be the most profound changes wrought by IoT in how cities operate over the next five years?

PA: I would say this, being from Alcatel-Lucent: the advert of ultra-broadband solutions will enable cities to take advantage of a greater level of real-time monitoring, such as smart-grid technologies, which will save people money and help the environment.

IG:  Who will your talks at IFSEC be of interest to?

Paul Adams: If you are interested in a different point of view…
