Fire news roundup

Young family found dead following farm cottage blaze

The bodies of a seven-year-old boy and his parents have been found in the charred ruins of a house devastated by fire near Reigate.

The young family died huddled together in bed on what was a freezing cold night. The victims have been named as Tiago Nunes, his wife Ana Herrera, and their son, Tiago, aged seven.

The bodies were only discovered when worried colleagues from the nearby farm where Mr Nunes worked went to check on him after he didn’t turn up for work.

A specialist forensic science police van arrived to investigate the possible cause of the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown and police have launched a major investigation.

Train ablaze as it pulls into London station [fire roundup]

Alarmed passengers were evacuated from a train yesterday after a fire broke out in its front carriage.

Footage taken from a platform showed clouds of smoke billowing out of the Southeastern train as it pulled into Kidbrooke station in southeast London.

The fire was described as “small” by the London Fire Brigade.

A spokesman for Southeastern trains said: “A small fire occurred underneath the driver’s cab on the 11.47am service from Kidbrooke to London Cannon Street.

“As soon as the driver became aware of this, he made an announcement to passengers, asking them to evacuate immediately onto the platform at Kidrooke station.

“Emergency services were called and the fire was put out. Network Rail engineers are working to move the train as quickly as possible to allow services to start running through Kidbrooke station again.

“Any passengers who have been delayed by 30 minutes or more are entitled to claim compensation via our Delay Repay compensation scheme.”

…And another train fire

It isn’t the only time firefighters have been summoned to a train fire this week after a fire broke out in the engine of a train in greater Manchester.

About 50 passengers were evacuated near Littleborough station and had to walk along the tracks as firefighters extinguished the blaze on Monday morning.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said: “Shortly after 10.30am, the train from Leeds to Manchester Victoria service was stopped near Littleborough station after reports of a fire from the engine.

“There were approximately 50 passengers on board the service and all were evacuated from the train and provided onward travel without further issues.

“The fire service attended and an internal investigation will now take place to determine the cause of the incident.”
