5 less obvious ways you can benefit from security cameras in the home and office

Sales of security cameras are surging.

Between 2016 and 2022 sales are expected to reach $71.28 billion a year, Markets and Markets projects.

While security applications will account for much of this growth, consumers and businesses are also finding non-security uses for cameras and these new uses are driving market demand. Here are five other ways security cameras can benefit you at home or at work.

Identifying visitors

In an age of smart homes, an increasing number of people have home security cameras that display on their connected television set and their smartphone. Of the estimated 30 million people who bought smart home technology over the past year, 63% bought it for security purposes, and 64% bought it for video monitoring, according to a report by Xfinity Home and August Home.

While many people are buying their home security cameras for security purposes, they also double as a handy way to identify visitors to your home.

Let’s say you’re watching your smart TV and the doorbell rings. You’re not sure if it’s a friend you were expecting or a sales call. If your smart TV or smartphone are wirelessly connected to a security camera at the front door, you can just check the display to see who’s at the door without having to get up and look.

If your security system also includes remote door control, you can even let your visitor in without getting up after you’ve used your camera to identify who they are.

Providing evidence for insurance claims

Another use of security cameras is providing evidence to protect you from false insurance claims. Let’s say a postal carrier claims they slipped on your walkway and injured themselves because you didn’t take care of an icy patch and they’re suing you.

You might be sure there was no ice on your walkway, but how do you prove it? If you had a security camera set up, you might have all the evidence you need to prove you’re not liable.

Or let’s say you own a company that employs security guards, and one of your guards is being falsely accused of using excessive force to evict a rowdy visitor from the premises — a type of frivolous lawsuit that happens all too often. If you caught the incident on your security camera, you’ll be able to prove that your guard acted appropriately and did not use excessive force.

Keeping an eye on employees

Another application of security cameras is monitoring employees. There are several compelling reasons to place security cameras in the workplace, says human resources expert Susan Heathfield.

One reason is to boost productivity by monitoring how much time employees are wasting at work. A Salary.com survey found that 31% of employees admit to wasting at least a half hour a day at work, while another 31% waste an hour, and 16% waste two hours.

Much of this wasted time is spent browsing the internet or social media, sometimes on inappropriate sites. In other cases, employees may be chatting, doing personal work or moonlighting for another job using company computer resources.

When employees are aware that security cameras are in place, it can help deter this type of time-wasting. Cameras can also help deter other negative workplace behaviours such as harassment or bullying.

Watching your kids

Security cameras can be used in a variety of ways to help you keep an eye on your kids. For instance, if your children are playing in the backyard while you’re inside making dinner, you can use a camera to see what they’re up to without having to step outside.

Or you might have to leave for work before your kids get up for school and you want to make sure they’re getting ready on time. Similarly, you might come home from work after your kids get home from school and you want to make sure they’re not getting into mischief when you’re not home.

You can also use a camera to make sure your kids are keeping up with their homework or doing their chores. Make sure they’re not sneaking online after you’ve told them to put their smartphone away and go to bed.

Watching nature and catching pests

Outdoor-mounted security cameras can help you see what’s going on in nature in your own backyard when you’re not around. If you’re a birdwatcher, mounting a security camera can let you watch birds without disturbing them.

Or you might have problems with a pest that’s getting into your garbage cans during the night. A security camera with night vision can help you identify the culprit so you can figure out the best way to take care of your unwanted guest.

I really like the benefits you listed in having security cameras. One aspect I like is that is you mentioned, cameras are becoming more integrated with other technologies, to where you are able to view the footage from the camera on your phone. My grandparents are getting older and I think you greatly benefit from technology like this. I’ll be sure to pass this on to them!
