Two Thirds of Retailers with CCTV Planning to Introduce Mobile Access

axis douglas courtTwo in three retailers with CCTV systems installed want to introduce mobile data access in the near future, according to a survey commissioned by Axis Communications.

The survey, which was conducted by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR), also revealed that 70% of the same sample want to introduce covert CCTV. Sixty percent of retailers already use covert CCTV.

Only 18% of those canvassed – which encompassed 2,200 retailers of all sizes in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden – are presently able to access live recorded footage but 66% intend to introduce mobile access soon.

Evidence that CCTV’s effectiveness as a crime deterrent was strengthened by the fact that  83% of retailers believe that CCTV reduces losses. Some 30% are now using fraud analytics to combat crime even more effectively with 60% of those who don’t use such tools planning to do so in the future.

“The clear and demonstrable return on investment through shrinkage reduction is a huge driving force for IPCCTV implementation,” says Andy Martin, business development manager for retail in Northern Europe for Axis.

“But retailers are not content with just that – they want even higher quality images that they can access easily through mobile technology, and in 30% of cases, they want better customer insights such as age and gender analytics and other IP applications such as people counting, queue management and dwell time.”

The report also revealed that a clear majority – 66% –  of installed systems in the retail market for CCTV comprise analogue technology.

“Yes, IP is increasing and we saw that trend clearly last year and this, particularly among bigger organisations – 63% of retailer chains that have adopted IP have 100 stores or more,” continues Martin.

“But there is still a community of retailers who have yet to be convinced of the true potential of IP technology. We are working hard with our channel partners to bridge that gap and provide the best advice about the products and solutions that are already delivering excellent results for many retailers.”

Interest in cloud storage has also grown since the last survey – which is now in its fifth year – with 30% of retailers now interested in moving storage into the cloud.

Pubic view monitors, meanwhile, are being used mainly to deter crime by 52% of retailers with a further 22% placing them only at store entrances.
