Engineers of Tomorrow Winners Announced and Entries Now Open for 2016

Apprentice security installers from Kings Security and Tel Cam Security Systems shared first place at the Engineers of Tomorrow Competition 2015.

Harrison Cooke and Jack Baker from Kings and Bobby and Carlos Dhunay from Tel Cam shared the £1,000 cash prize after the tie for top spot – the first such tie in the 16 years the competition has been running.

Third place went to Padraig Lennon from NM Fire & Security and Jonny English from H&J Martin.

The award was one of several announced at the Security & Fire Excellence Awards at London Hilton on Park Lane on Wednesday 25 November 2015.

It was the culmination of a process which began at IFSEC International 2015 in June, where more than 50 young engineers pitted their skills against one another in a 90-minute installation challenge. Participants were tasked with assessing a previously installed intruder alarm system, identifying the faults, re-commissioning the system and applying any additional security and safety measures required.

The overall heat winners and their employers were invited to the prestigious Security & Fire Excellence Awards. All winners were Level 2 security systems apprentices at the time of the competition and have now gone on to commence their Level 3.

Entries are now open for the 2016 event, which will kick off with new heats at IFSEC International 2016, which takes place between 21-23 June at London ExCeL. Click here to submit your entry.

Engineers of Tomorrow is part of Apprenticeships for Fire & Security, an initiative that places apprentices into careers in the security industry industry and supports their development. Sponsored by IFSEC, CSL DualCom, NSI, SSAIB and Skills for Security the scheme has already helped launch the careers of more than 3,000 young apprentices.

“We are extremely happy to have been involved in this award,” said Carlos and Bobby from Tel Cam after the event. “This would not have been possible without the help of our dads, John and Raj, who own Tel Cam Security.

“The Engineers of Tomorrow competition is an amazing learning opportunity which tests our knowledge for intruder alarm systems and we plan on entering this competition again next year as it helps us show our ability.

“We completed Level 2 of our apprenticeship last year with Skills for Security and their resources and service are excellent. We are currently studying for the Level 3 with Skills for Security and we would definitely recommend this course to other young people as it is a very niche career that carries a lot of potential.”

Said Skills for Security assessor Mark Cunningham: “It was wonderful to see how far Bobby and Carlos have progressed with Skills for Security.  They first entered the competition last year and performed really well winning one of the heats and since then they have gone from strength to strength.

“Skills for Security have noticed how hard they both work on site and at college and we are delighted to see them receive their just rewards and hope they will inspire others looking for a career in the security industry.”
