Aberdeen becomes international capital of culture (fire safety)

[

Aberdeen is set to become the ‘international capital’ of cultural fire safety in May as a series of conferences take place there, including a meeting of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) – one of the few to be held outside the US.

The four-day programme from 5-8 May will include: a meeting of the NFPA’s cultural resources committee; a one-day conference on the fire protection of heritage buildings, a seminar on residential and domestic sprinklers; and a meeting of the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association.

The linchpin for all this activity has been Mike Coull, a Grampian Fire and Rescue officer who is currently seconded to Historic Scotland as heritage co-ordinator for Scotland’s fire services. He has also set up the Scottish historic buildings national fire database, a catalogue of historic buildings across the country which can provide fire and rescue services with plans of buildings, photographs, and information on topics such as water supplies, building features and how buildings may react in a fire.

In acknowledgement of this work, Mr Coull was invited to join the NFPA committee and with the help of the Aberdeen Convention Bureau, he brought its Spring meeting to Aberdeen.
