Fire breaks out at 24-storey block of flats in Shadwell, East London

A fire at a block of flats in Shadwell, East London broke out on Wednesday (20 September) early afternoon in a 24-storey block of flats.

At least 12 fire engines and 80 firefighters tackled the fire on Hindmarsh Close.

A 64 metre ladder was also at the scene, with the fire reportedly breaking out in a 14th floor flat on the 24-storey apartment block. Much of the flat has reportedly been damaged by the fire, alongside half of a neighbouring flat.

The London Fire Brigade said it was first called at 12:16, with the blaze under control by 13:26.

Around 40 people reportedly left the building before firefighters arrived, and another 20 were led to safety by firefighters. There have been no reports of any injuries.

The incident follows from a fire that took place in a block of flats in Kilburn, just a day earlier. Half of a flat on the 13th floor was alight – the building was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. More news to follow…
