Around 10 firefighters were called to an electrical junction box in Cambridge after residents reported the smell of gas in the early hours of Monday.
Crews cordoned off the street due to gas explosion fears. They arrived at 5.48 am and stayed at the scene until 9 am.
Electrical safety engineers from UK Power Networks, the company responsible for the distribution of electricity in the East of England, were also called out to investigate.
Speaking to info4fire, a spokesman said: “UK Power Networks engineers were called to Rayson Way in Cambridge by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service at about 6.10am on Monday.
“On arrival it was found there was a fault on an electrical box forming part of our low voltage underground network.
“In order for our engineers to safely fix the fault, electricity supplies to 34 customers had to be isolated at about 8.50 am. Power was restored to 23 customers by 1.15 pm and the remaining 11 by 3.20 pm.”
Permanent repairs to the affected equipment were completed the next day.
