The latest national fire statistics covering the 12 month period to 30 September 2005 continue to show a fall in the number of fire related deaths – now the lowest since 1959.
The Fire Statistics Monitor published by the Department for Communities and Local Government shows that:
– Fire related death in the UK fell to 489, while injuries fell by 6% to 14,100. Of the deaths, 300 were from accidental dwelling fires, a fall of 16% compared to a year earlier.
– The UK fire and rescue service attended 870,000 fire or false alarms – 8% less than in the previous year.
– Fire calls fell by 11% to 431,000 while false alarms fell by 4% to 439,000, 284,500 of which were due to “apparatus”.
The number of primary fires (property, vehicles and/or casualties) fell by 10% to 170,000 – the lowest since 1988. Secondary fires fell by 12% to 251,000 and there were 58,000 fire in homes, a fall of 7%.
