Because of a high incidence of fires in the Middle East, civil defence authorities are insisting on higher standards of fire safety across the board, according to the organisers of a fire safety conference in the region.
A lack of maintenance inspections by certified, competent engineers coupled with poor workplace health and safety have led to a high frequency of fire incidents in region, say IQPC, organisers of the inaugural Fire Safety MENA 2011 in Doha, Qatar (3-6 April). This situation is further complicated, they say, by confusion created from using a large number of international fire safety codes.
Wayne Harris, HSE director at Qatar Project Management will share his perspective on fire safety in construction projects by reviewing an effective fire risk profile. He will also evaluate stakeholders impacts and mitigation planning for emergencies, as well as review the process of designing out fire risk and potential hazards.
Other topics include the use of approved documents and British Standards, the use of voice evacuation, preventative fire safety measures to protect assets, and a cost-benefit analysis of passive fire protection methods.
