Panchkula buildings to be scrutinized for fire-safety measures

In the wake of the spurt in fire incidents, deputy commissioner S S Phulia has issued a notice to fire department to inspect various premises in Panchkula having equipped with proper fire-safety measures. The focus will especially be on petrol pumps and cinema halls, which are crowded.

“We want to make sure that buildings are well-equipped with fire-safety equipment. Strict action will be taken against the violators,” the DC said.

Sources said, “A four-member team has been constituted to conduct raids on these premises. The team includes a chief fire officer, a senior municipal corporation officer, a senior HUDA officer and a food and supply official. It will start the work within a week.”

Fire department officials said there have been many incidents wherein blaze went out of control because buildings lacked fire equipment.

“People should understand the importance of fire-safety measures,” said chief fire officer S S Malik.

A few days ago, a fire broke out in a factory in Industrial Area, Phase II, gutting goods of Rs 1.5 crore. As many as 16 firemen were hospitalized due to chlorine intoxication at the unit. The blaze could have been controlled at the beginning if its owner had installed fire-safety equipment in the factory, the officials added.
