Pupils from Thomas Adams School celebrate fire safety win
More than 4,500 nine to 10-year-olds from 34 schools across the county took part in the annual competition, which was set up to educate pupils about the importance of fire safety.
This year, it was won by the Thomas Adams School in Wem, one of 11 schools to reach the regional finals held at Telford fire station.
Pupils managed to bag a £500 cheque for the school, following a series of rapid fire questions and a race to put on fire kit including trousers, jacket, boots and helmet.
Deputy chief fire officer John Redmond said the quiz had helped children learn hundreds of facts, figures and expert advice.
“This vital community knowledge will be taken back and shared with families and friends to benefit everyone.”
It makes up part of the Be Cool Be Safe education programme for Shropshire schools which also tackles road safety and crime.
Children were educated about arson attacks, hoax fire calls and the common causes of fire, among other facts on fire safety.
