Fire safety officers “alarmed” at major deficiencies in pubs and clubs

Fire officers have voiced their concerns about inadequate levels of fire safety at pubs, clubs and bars in north Wales.

Officers are said to be “alarmed” at the results of recent audits and inspections of licensed premises, which have revealed “major fire safety deficiencies”.

"The number of premises with an insufficient or lack of fire risk assessment is frightening,” said Mark Kassab, business education manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service. “Other problems we have found are blocked or locked fire exits, inadequately serviced and tested fire alarms and emergency lights, poor standards of housekeeping and a lack of fire safety management.”

To help licensees comply with their obligations, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is running free workshops on the Fire Safety Order and the fire risk assessment process.
