Fireside chats with the FIA – getting to know the sector

IFSEC Global puts the questions to Adam Richardson, Business Liaison at the Fire Industry Association (FIA), to find out what its new content feature, ‘Fireside Chats’, is all about.

FIA-FiresideChat-20Hi Adam! Can you tell us a little more about the Fireside Chats? When did you come up with the idea, and why?

Fireside Chats is our new content feature. This idea comes as a result of our marketing group meeting. Fireside chats are a simple idea where I will speak to a variety of different people from the fire industry – from CEOs to apprentices. We wanted to do this to highlight the variety of roles and people that work in the sector to others. We also hope to show the fire industry in a positive light to those outside of it. This feature will be coming monthly.

And what kind of topics are discussed?

There are a variety of topics discussed in Fireside Chats. They range from more casual questions that provide a quick introduction to the interviewee to industry related topics, which allow the interviewee to speak about their career, aspirations and state of the industry.

Do you have plans to run ‘live’ fireside chats, such as at FIM Expo, for example?

Yes, we have lots planned for Fireside Chats as it continues to grow. In fact, at the recent Local Government Authority Conference held in Blackpool, I was able to complete two interviews. Moving forward, we are keen to have a Fireside Chat with a live audience at one of many of the great industry events.

We’ll turn the tables now a little, and ask a few random questions from your own fireside chats…

If you could be from any other era, when would it be and why?

I would love to have a chance to see what life was like living in the Egyptian Empire, it’s a period of time that really fascinates me. It would be great to get a glimpse of the iconic Pyramids being built.

What do you most enjoy about working in the fire safety industry?

I like, and continue to be humbled by, the willingness of experienced and influential individuals to take time out of there day to share their knowledge, experiences and tips with you. A close second would be that there is a lot of opportunity for us to change the industry for the better and that is something that FIA is proud to continue doing.

What topics of interest will the FIA be looking to cover over the coming months?

With so much change happening in the fire industry we are spoilt for choice on the topics we can cover. We have actually asked the industry what they want to read about in a survey, which you can fill in below. Have your own say, here!
