Thermal Cameras to Hit High Street for the First Time

Flir“Thermal imaging is going commercial and FLIR is leading the way.”

These were the words of Dwight Dumpert, the director of product management for security at FLIR, the world’s largest commercial company specialising in the design and production of thermal imaging.

And he may be right – after showcasing the world’s first consumer thermal camera at a press conference yesterday.

The FLIR ONE will feature on iPhones and be available in electronic retailers from July, starting at $350. They intend to release a security camera version of the thermo camera in October.

Bill Klink, vice president of security business development at FLIR, said: “The FLIR ONE is simple to use as it just attaches like an extra battery to your phone. It also extends the battery of your iPhone.

“The device will be primarily used a personal night vision system. For example, if you leave the shopping mall and it’s dark outside, you want to be able to see where you are going. Thermal imaging can help you do this.”

“We are happy to be taking thermal imaging into the consumer world and hopefully into the realm of shifting millions of units a year,” he added.

The thermo camera has many uses, including as a safety device or pest control device. You could, for example, determine whether chicken has been cooked thoroughly or find rodents in a dark garage.

Klink also expects mobile apps that expand the use of the thermo camera to emerge.

FLIR also introduced FLIR Cloud, a service platform offering instant remote access to FLIR security products using mobile and desktop devices. FLIR Cloud is compatible with smartphones, tablets (both iOS and Android), PC and Mac.
