India, Hong Kong sign pact to deal with criminal matters

A Hong Kong delegation, led by secretary for security, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Peoples’ Republic of China, Ambrose Lee, is on a visit to New Delhi from the 13th to 15th of this month to sign the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement in criminal matters between the two countries.

The agreement was signed on Monday by the Minister of State for Home, Mullappally Ramachandran on behalf of India and Ambrose Lee, Secretary for Security on behalf of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Peoples’ Republic of China.

The agreement aims at improving effectiveness of law enforcement of the contracting parties in investigation and prosecution of crime and confiscation of proceeds and instruments of crime. With the signing of the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement in criminal matters, cooperation in judicial matters will be comprehensive.

The agreement will come into force 30 days after the date on which the parties have notified each other that their respective requirements for the entry into force of the agreement have been complied with.

Before the signing ceremony, the delegation met the Union Home Secretary, G.K.Pillai and held fruitful discussions on issues of mutual interest.
