Detector helps installers stay ‘one step ahead’ of ACPO policy

The high profile launch in London’s Docklands was attended by representatives of ACPO, the BSIA and Pyronix customers who heard that the Veritec P2 detector was "revolutionary".
The first of its kind, the detector combines two completely separate technologies – PIR movement detection and atmospheric pressure change detection – in one unit.
The significant thing about the Veritec P2 is that both detectors have completely separate outputs in one housing wired with one standard alarm cable.
At the event, Pyronix stressed that this was not a dual technology detector when two technologies send one signal. Each of the technologies in Veritec sets off its own signal and the single unit provides confirmation technology from a single sensor housing. The product is priced "around the GB pound 30 mark" but only one single detector is needed to protect an enclosed space.
The company says it is the culmination of many years research and development into pressure sensing technology.
Jim Hill, MD of Birmingham Alarm Technicians and Chairman of The Acquila Group of installation companies, said although the unit would not suit all applications, he was convinced it was a useful tool that would allow installers to stay "one step ahead" of ACPO 2000. While still providing confirmation, the installation of a single unit saved significantly on time and because only one cable was needed it meant cheaper costs.
Julie Kenny, Pyronix MD, said "new policies call for new ideas".
The event heard from Tim Geddes, Deputy Chairman of the BSIA and Chairman of the Security Systems Section, who detailed interim guidelines to help installers with confirmation technology until the new DD243 draft document is published early next year. (See our ‘ACPO Unscrambled: Deadline’ supplement for details).
Graeme Dow of Intelligence Services gave an insurance update, saying that rates were "rocketing" even before the events of September 11 and now it would be a lot more expensive to get insurance cover.
Also speaking was Inspector Kevin Mann, Secretary of the ACPO Security Systems Group who outlined national false alarm statistics.
