With the principle aim of delivering a wide range of crime prevention activities across the UK, SBD work in partnership with the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, manufacturers, trade and business organisations, testing houses, certification bodies, standards authorities and many others.
SBD’s activities over the years generated a demand for security rated products and for this reason SBD created a product based police accreditation scheme some 20 years ago. Presently there are more than 800 SBD member companies producing a significant variety of crime prevention products across a wide range of industry sectors, but to date this has not included alarm system installers.

However, following increasing industry interest SBD have created a new SBD Alarm Standard. The new standard is not a replacement for the National Police Chiefs Council Security Systems Policy (NPCC SSP), or an alternative for certification by a UKAS accredited certification body (currently delivered by NSI or SSAIB), but incorporates the existing criteria whilst building on police and industry knowledge and expertise to produce the new enhanced SBD Alarm Standard.
Installers meeting the SBD Alarm Standard now have the option of joining the new SBD scheme, following an assessment from their respective Alarm Inspectorate body, enabling members to utilise the powerful and trusted ‘Police Preferred Specification’ branding and therefore gaining a marketing advantage.
SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security-related products, services or installations in the UK.

SBD systems have been specifically designed to reduce false calls, which will reduce the risk for end users.”
SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a police owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK. Board Members include senior police officers from each of the four Home Nations who control and direct the work PCPI carries out on behalf of the Police Service.
