Screening and vetting: core HR processes

Adrian Taylor, the managing director at G4S Employment Screening & Vetting, told SMT Online: “In a globalised marketplace, establishing an individual’s identity, employment status and credentials is vital. The dramatic changes in the labour market have helped to transform comprehensive screening and vetting for employees from a ‘nice to have’ to a core HR process.”

Taylor added: “Our team of experts will be on hand at the exhibition to guide employers through the range of screening services we can offer, and provide expert advice on how our solutions can play a vital role in supporting operational and recruitment decisions.”

Taylor is rightly proud of the fact that his operation safeguards an organisation’s interests by providing accurate information and impartial expert advice about people the client needs to be able to rely on (including permanent or temporary employees, job applicants, agency or contract staff and potential sub-contractors).

“We help companies control their ‘people risks’,” stated Taylor, “offering assurances that all reasonable steps are being taken to ensure the people they rely on so much really are who and what they say they are.”

Visit G4S on Stand A60 at the event. The security company will also be showcasing its range of complete training solutions which may be tailored to meet industry regulations and customers’ needs.

G4S awarded major mine clearance contract in Iraq

Meanwhile, G4S Risk Management has been awarded a major mine action contract in Southern Iraq by LUKOIL.

This is the first contract for mine survey and clearance to be signed by a major international oil and gas company operating in Iraq, and will allow LUKOIL to commence the development of the giant West Qurna 2 oilfield in the Basra province.

LUKOIL is one of the world’s leading vertically integrated oil and gas companies. Its main activities include the exploration and production of oil and gas, production of petroleum products and petrochemicals and marketing of these outputs.

Most of the company’s exploration and production activity is located in Russia, while its main resource base is in Western Siberia.

LUKOIL is presently carrying out international exploration and production projects in Kazakhstan, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Venezuela, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Iraq.

The G4S contract, which has been awarded to G4S’ Ordnance Management business, starts with immediate effect. The first two phases are expected to complete by early 2011.

Technical surveys and mine clearance operations

In essence, the contract will involve a variety of mine action assessment, survey, data capture and clearance teams made up of predominantly Iraqi personnel. The teams will conduct technical surveys as well as mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance operations in order to survey and clear hundreds of square kilometres of land ahead of the LUKOIL teams starting work.

The West Qurna 2 oil field is one of the largest in Iraq, with known reserves of 12.9 billion barrels. LUKOIL expects drilling operations will start in early 2011, with production beginning before the end of 2012.

G4S Risk Management has offered ordnance management services to governmental, commercial and humanitarian organisations since 1994, and its teams have supported the oil and gas industry in many areas throughout Africa and Far East Russia.

Over that time, the organisation has cleared thousands of kilometres of land and destroyed over 25 million items of unexploded ordnance.

Unlocking the Basra oilfields

Speaking about this latest contract, Nigel Billingham (the group managing director at G4S Risk Management) commented: “We’re very pleased to have been awarded this strategic project to help unlock the Basra oilfields. The economic development of Iraq can only be accelerated by the start of production at the West Qurna field, and we’ll be working hard to ensure that our operations support the safe and secure start of this important work.”

Dave McDonnell, the managing director at G4S Ordnance Management, added: “This is a significant contract for us, and demonstrates G4S’ ongoing commitment to Iraq and meeting the demanding timelines of this and other programmes.”

McDonnell continued: “We’ve already spent months training and equipping our Iraqi teams, as well as ensuring our technologically advanced equipment is ready for work to begin.”

He believes that any responsible company looking to initiate safe oil production in Iraq will need to complete ordnance management operations ahead of drilling. “Our teams offer the best opportunity for them to do so in line with internationally accepted standards,” concluded McDonnell.

G4S Risk Management offers risk mitigation and secure support services to Governments, international agencies and multinational corporations requiring critical services and infrastructure security while operating in high threat and complex environments.

The company provides risk advisory and consultancy, premium protective security, ordnance management and specialist training services.

G4S provides support for England team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games

G4S also provided an extensive range of services to the England team in Delhi during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which began on 3 October.

Under the terms of the agreement, G4S took care of a range of logistical and security solutions for Commonwealth Games England (CGE), which comprised 580 athletes, coaches, medical staff and headquarters staff as well as a selection of VIPs.

G4S managed all the security requirements for the team’s VIPs and receptions, and provided security on the shuttle between the Athletes Village and various Games’ venues, as well as at the Team Lodge.

G4S also operated a 24-hour ‘crisis centre’ at the Games to support the England contingent in the event of an emergency.

Ian Horseman Sewell, director of G4S Major Events, said: “We’re proud to have been a supporter of the England team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. There were many well-documented concerns about the organisation for this event, but we were there to ensure that the Games ran as smoothly and safely as possible as far as the England team was concerned.”

Horseman Sewell added: “We offered an integrated security and logistical solution to meet CGE’s needs outside of the Athletes’ Village and the venues, complementing the arrangements provided by the Games’ organisers. The local knowledge of our Delhi-based team was extremely important in ensuring that team members and their guests were happy, secure and safe.”

Joanna Robinson – the development director for Commonwealth Games England – explained: “Having a safe and secure environment where the team can relax out of the public eye and meet their family and friends was very important. The professional approach of G4S in supporting the team in India has been a significant asset to our operational delivery at the Games.”
