The guide has been produced to help all specifiers of equipment – from police to facilities managers – choose the right system for any environment.
Said Phillip Gater, Chairman of the BSIA Access Control Section, said the guide had been produced in response to requests from the ABI and other organisations. "The sector has been crying out for a document of this nature for many years."
Security Classifications of Access Control Systems, now available from the BSIA, has been produced in close liaison with the Association of British Insurers. Jane Milne, of the ABI, says the document is a "unique tool" that will enable all specifiers to identify suitable system components within a practical framework.
"The information is highly accessible and will benefit specifiers at all levels of experience. It will make an important contribution to the quality of specifying decisions, the reputation of the technology and the vital role of access control systems in property risk management.’
British Standards already exist that cover the design and installation of systems, but before this publication there were no standards or guides available that graded the security of the complete access control installation.
It gives examples of instances where different grades of security are required, then lists the types of equipment that would be suitable. It also provides a handy single page summary sheet to work from.
Gater added: "It will ensure that specifiers are fully aware of all the factors that affect the security capabilities of access control systems.
The guide will enable them to apply a simple grading scheme to achieve the appropriate level of security."
The guide covers access control doors, electromagnetic locks, machine readable technologies for tokens, and reader technology.
