Songs about security: Don’t Mug Yourself

We disagree, unequivocally. So for this week’s security song let’s hear it for the Streets, who – hailing from the deepest, darkest recesses of the West Midlands – tell it like what it really is.

You really need to have your wits about you growing up on Brum’s mean streets, and this is what singer Mike Skinner was on about when he wrote Don’t Mug Yourself.

OK, so admittedly the security link is a little tenuous, but bear with me. The track is set in a caff, where Skinner and his mate argue over whether Skinner should contact a bird he met the night before. Skinner’s mate says he shouldn’t, because, in not so many words, wearing your heart on your sleeve is the surest way of mugging yourself.

But as I4S can attest, the surest way of mugging yourself is actually to perform a crime in open view of CCTV. Yep. We’ve heard no end of hapless criminals, who upon making their getaway, manage to get themselves caught on camera or injure themselves so badly they need medical attention. Last month, we featured the video of the bomber who ran into a lamp post while fleeing the scene and more recently we had a list of the top most dim-witted law breakers from RemGuard.

Also – interesting factoid for you, Skinner had a cameo role in the fifth series of Doctor Who as a security guard, featuring in the episode The Time of Angels. It’s on Wikipedia, it must be true.

So, to any would-be criminals who might be reading this, if you’re going to break the law then please have the decency to do it properly. Don’t mug yourself.
