Delhi High Court Slams Government for Slow Upgrading of Security Infrastructure

obamaThe Delhi High Court has lambasted the government for neglecting security infrastructure except when required for visits by glamorous visiting dignitaries.

Nahendra Mohdi’s administration has rushed through the installation of 15,000 cameras in advance of the visit of US President Obama to New Dehli for Republic Day.

A High Court bench including Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva said: “Because of a foreign president, you (Government) do it, but not for Indian citizens. If we direct you to do it for the Indians, you do in months and years, else you do it in weeks. Let’s get someone from outer space.”

The bench also said the CCTV cameras installed for Obama’s visit should not be removed after his farewell.

Out of these 15,000 cameras around 80 to 100 will be installed at strategic entry points into the city and parade venue.

Featuring advanced face-recognition algorithms the cutting-edge cameras can identify faces in the crowd and match them to available photographs of criminals and terrorists in the authority’s database.

The High Court has previously asked the Government to upgrade and add surveillance cameras in the aftermath of various terrorist atrocities and other security breaches – often, it feels, to no avail.

Earlier this month, the Delhi police confirmed that they have completed the installation of 3,932 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 85 locations including border checkposts and courts.

The second most populous city of the world and particularly vulnerable to terror attacks from extremists New Dehli is arguably in great need not only of more surveillance cameras, but also cutting-edge video analytics, PSIM technology and crowd management expertise.
