Emma Shaw to Step Down as Security Institute Chairman

emma shaw 2Emma Shaw has announced that she will step down from her role as chairman of the Security Institute.

In a valedictory letter posted to LinkedIn Shaw said she will be leaving the position in April after two years at the helm.

Shaw, who is also managing director of counter-surveillance experts Esoteric Ltd and non-executive director at security consultants the Falanx Group, joined the Institute in 2007 and has variously occupied the roles of registrar and chairman of the Validation Board, director of finance and vice-chairman before her election to the top job.

“The Institute has continued to grow significantly and has ‘grown up’ over the past two years with a number of achievements under our belt and I feel very privileged and proud to be part of that growth and development and the organisations ability to influence and represent your views and shape our industry at the highest levels,” said Shaw in the letter.

“Our membership has increased significantly, across all levels and in particular the number of student members we now have; this is an area where we have been developing our approach to actively encourage people into our profession as a first-choice career. We have a well-developed 10 year strategy underway and are in a good financial position to ensure that we are able to deliver upon our strategy.”

Shaw’s successor will be chosen by the board of directors in the next few weeks and announced at the AGM on 24 March.

“The role of Chairman is an immensely enjoyable and satisfying role,” continued Shaw. “However it is time-consuming and in order to lead the Institute to its next level of growth and development, I feel it would require the continued level of commitment that I have been providing over the past two years and it will not be possible for me to continue to do this.

“I therefore feel that it is now an appropriate time in the Institute’s development for me to step aside and enable my successor the opportunity to continue the work of the Board, embed our strategy and various work streams and continue the growth and development of the Institute; it will also enable me to focus on other business and personal interests.

“The Institute has developed through the commitment of so many volunteers, from our founding Directors to our current Board of Directors and the many working boards and committees the Institute now has; I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside such an enthusiastic and committed group of volunteers and the committed and loyal staff at Institute HQ, and I am proud of what we have collectively achieved.”
