Indian Railways to Install CCTV Cameras in Rail Coaches to Step Up Security

The Indian Railways has decided to fast track the installation of CCTV surveillance cameras in about 20,000 train coaches to reinforce security.

An estimated Rs700cr has been allocated for the initiative out of the Nirbhaya Fund. The CCTV cameras will be installed in both ladies and general compartments.

“It has been decided in a recent meeting held at the PMO to speed up certain projects which include works on new lines, construction of rail overbridges and underbridges, improving passenger convenience, and safety and security,” said a senior Railway Ministry official who attended the meeting.

Even though the railways aim to install CCTV cameras in as many trains as possible, only a few trains travelling suburban routes have had surveillance cameras installed so far.

The Nirbhaya Fund was founded in 2013 in memory of a rape victim who died following the incident which took place in Delhi in December 2012. Government initiates and NGOs have pledged money to the Nirbhaya Fund, with the Women and Child Development Ministry has earmarking Rs 3000cr.

The railway has already installed CCTV cameras at all major stations to monitor railway premises. The same CCTV cameras has now also been decided to help the authorities to better manage sanitation arrangements.
