The decision to appoint Selex ES as the Official Protective Perimeter Security Provider was announced by the Organising Committee earlier this week with Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, David Grevemberg, saying he was “delighted” to be working with Selex ES, thanks to its “strong record of supporting the security needs of large events.”

Selex carries out the bulk of its operations in Italy and the UK, with 2,000 of their 17,700-strong workforce based in Scotland. The design work on the security systems will start immediately with a view to completing works in early July 2014.

There are 20 Games venues across the city of Glasgow, including an Athletes Village, all of which will have perimeter security solutions designed by Selex. The Games are scheduled to get underway on 23 July, with 4,500 athletes from across the Commonwealth competing.

Fabrizio Giulianini, CEO of Selex ES, said in the announcement:

For years, we at Selex ES have been bringing together innovative UK companies to deliver integrated and technologically advanced solutions. Providing major event perimeter security for this iconic event in Scotland’s sporting history will continue that tradition. We remain committed to contributing to the nation’s broader industrial legacy, enhancing the next generation of local skills to meet the security challenges of the future.

Organizers will be keen to avoid any of the negative press that afflicted G4S in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics in London. Councillor Archie Graham emphasized that “security is a prime concern in successfully organizing an event on this scale,” while Glasgow 2014’s Grevenberg added that “Glasgow 2014, along with Police Scotland and our Games Partners, is focused on delivering a safe and secure environment for all who will be part of the Games.”
