Japan Delivers another Naval Ship to Vietnam to Enhance Maritime Security

Japan has delivered another ship to Vietnam under its non-refundable aid policy for enhancing the country’s maritime security.

A total of six such ships will be handed over this year, revealed the Envoy-Head of the Economic Board of the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam during the handing over ceremony in Hai Phong.

It’s the second ship Vietnamese authorities have received from Japan this year, with the first one being handed over to the Vietnam Marine Police in February. The remaining four ships are expected to arrive in Vietnam towards the year end.

The first ship handed over to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Fisheries Resources Surveillance Department, named HAYATO, is 56.13m long and 9m wide, with a gross tonnage of 1,079 tons. It was built by Japan in 1993 and has the capacity for accommodating about 49 crew members.

The ship had to be optimised with respective modifications to better equip it for the role of maritime security.

Japan will contribute JPY500 million (US$4 million) in 2015 under the agreement reached between both countries to enhance Vietnam’s maritime security.

Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vu Van Tam, thanked the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation System for the aid.
