The Maharashtra State Government has signed an agreement worth Rs949 crore with Larsen and Toubro to install 6000 CCTV cameras across Mumbai by September 2016.

The project was initially proposed following the 26/11 terror attack. Tenders were floated four times but no security companies  submitted a compelling bid.

After the inauguration of a new state government a committee was formed and the contract was signed 100 days into the new administration.

“Installed CCTVs will guarantee a safer city to its citizens. It will not support the Mumbai police to maintain law and order but it will also help in improving traffic management,” says Devendra Fadnavis, chief minister, Maharashtra, after the contract was signed between the government and company representatives.

The project is likely to be executed in three phases. The first phase of installation will start in South Mumbai and is expected to be completed by November 2015, while CCTV will be deployed in North and East Mumbai by April 2016.

The final and third phase will focus on Central and West Mumbai, with installation expected to happen by September 2016.

Around 20 thermal cameras will be installed along Mumbai’s coast to monitor sea movements.

The project will also establish two command centers at the Mumbai commissioner’s office and at Kalina in suburban Mumbai. One command center will be set up at traffic police headquarter for traffic management.

This will enable authorities to view camera feeds at the city police stations, DCP offices and regional additional CP offices.
