Contestants in the Apprentice Challenge had just two hours to install components on a security system, including the necessary documentation, all under the scrutiny of visitors to IFSEC 2001.
The Apprentice Skills Challenge, sponsored by BT RedCARE, ran throughout the exhibition. Twenty four teams took part in the skills event and results were judged by inspectors from NACOSS and SSAIB who were looking for the same quality of work they would expect from approved companies.
Finalists included James Oliver and Darren Todd of Classic Alarm and Security Systems; Daniel Williams of Goldfield Security and Greg Brewer of RJK Security Systems; Matthew Maggs of Cannon Security and James Gordon of Initial Electronic Security Systems.
Overall winners (of a VIP trip by helicopter to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone) were Danny Newman of Cobra Security Systems, Chingford, and Jonathon Bell of MRP Alarms, Harrowgate. Second place went to PhillipTattersall and Stephen Emmett of Albert Security Systems, Burnley.
Third place went to Steven Davies and Mark Sargent of GCD Security, Maidenhead.
The challenge was organised in conjunction with SITO, South East Security Co-operative (SESCO), NSI and SSAIB. The prize giving was held at BT’s London headquarters.
In another event aimed at rewarding good work, John Pretswell received the Telford College Modern Apprentice of the Year Award presented to the individual whose performance during the three-year Modern Apprenticeship Security Installation course was exceptional. He received SVQ Level 2 Fire, Security and Emergency Alarm Systems, SVQ Level 3 Security Systems: Technical Services plus seven National Certificate Units as underpinning knowledge. The award was also sponsored by BT RedCARE.
