BSIA Briefing: The role of security consultants
Independent and professional security consultants have the knowledge and experience to recommend appropriate security measures that address risks to and within a business. If an effective assessment isn’t conducted, it’s fair to say that the business concerned can only guess at what risks are likely to impact upon it. In turn, this results in a situation where either many threats/risks aren’t covered, or where there’s a massive overspend to provide mitigation against all forms of risk.
Understanding the threats and risks that the business faces is the primary requirement in developing an effective security strategy – one that protects staff, complements the business operation, aids profitability and reflects the overall ethos of the organisation.
In today’s world businesses face a number of risks, but it’s common for them only to consider external risks from crime (ie burglars and opportunist thieves). Other risks do exist (internally through employee theft, or through terrorist/activist attention). There are also risks (for example fire and flood) that will impact on a given business’ ability to trade. The security budget is better spent not in response to a criminal act but rather on implementing a solution to deter the possibility.
A security consultant will identify all threats that could possibly impact on an organisation through expert independent knowledge of both the business and current risks and crime figures/trends. Each type of business will attract different forms of threat – an assessment will gauge the extent of the risk, while also determining solutions to counter and minimise the risk.
End users who are looking to employ the services of a consultant must make sure they operate to British Standard BS 8549.
