David Hines wins 2010 ASIS UK Chapter Mervyn David Award

The prestigious annual award is named in honour of much-respected former ASIS chairman and air commodore Mervyn David and bestowed for services to ASIS or, indeed, the wider security community.

Previous winners have included former BSIA chief executive David Dickinson and Bruce George MP, the Parliamentarian who did most to bring about the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

This year, ASIS’ UK Chapter decided to widen the scope of the award, and David Hines is the 2010 winner.

Hines is credited with founding the charity that is the National Victims Association (access the dedicated web link on the right hand panel of this page). He did so back in 1992 following the tragic murder of his 23 year-old daughter Marie.

In essence, this marvellous charity supports families bereaved through homicide by providing respite events, specialist bereavement counselling, legal advice, advocacy and creative therapeutic projects for children.

Patrons of the charity include former Lord Chancellor Lord Charles Falconer QC, Commander David Johnston QPM and Baroness Harris of Richmond, the patron of ASIS here in the UK.

Scarman Trust Award 2006

David’s work has been recognised on several occasions, in fact. He’s credited as a previous winner of the Scarman Trust Award.

ASIS’ UK Chapter very much hopes that recognising Hines in this way will come as a small tribute the work he been doing for almost 20 years, encourage him to continue and raise the profile of the charity within the security community at large.

Fundraising is a desperately hard task at the best of times, and particularly so at present, and the NVA faces a constant struggle on this front.

Currently, the main focus is to raise money for the charity’s annual conference and respite event (which takes place in July, but will likely not happen without the necessary levels of support).

David Hines will be presented with the 2010 Mervyn David Award at ASIS UK’s Spring event, to be held on 16 March in the City of London.

If you think you may be able to offer some support to the National Victims Association, or if you’re interested in attending the ASIS Spring event to see David Hines collect his richly deserved award, feel free to contact ASIS UK’s vice chairman Mike Hurst via e-mail at: [email protected]
