Demons and Angels: The Security Institute’s 2009 Annual Conference
An exclusive event designed for both Institute members and invited guests, the conference will look at the challenges facing security professionals and the innovative solutions being employed to protect people, assets and information.
Alongside 12 speakers – more of whom anon – who’ll be on hand to provide details of current Best Practice and new ways of working in the security arena, there’ll be exhibitors on hand to demonstrate the latest systems technologies and solutions.
This being the Institute’s second Annual Conference, the organisers are keen once again to provide “an intensive knowledge and experience sharing Forum”. The Institute states: “Not everyone wants the same thing from a conference. Some want to learn and assimilate information, while others seek to have their own knowledge reinforced through the speakers’ content. Some enjoy listening to debate, others like to participate. There’ll be something interesting for everyone.”

Highlights from the main speakers
SIA chairman Baroness Ruth Henig will be looking at where the SIA now sits, focusing on the possibilities of differentiation between Approved Contractor Scheme-registered companies, the in-house debate, what’s coming down the tracks (ie the compulsory registration of vehicle immobilisation companies) and how the advent of a new Government might affect regulation.
Bruce George, the often outspoken Labour MP for Walsall South, is well known for his desire to see the security industry better itself by way of regulation. Bruce has lectured at over 60 British and international universities on a diverse range of subjects including defence, international relations and institutions, peacekeeping, policing and private security and overseas development.
One wonders whether he might have a thing or too to say about the decision not to licence in-house security personnel? We shall see…
Having recently joined Nomura, Institute member Andy Williams – a former employee of the contract guarding world – will consider the difference between the two worlds of in-house and contract security. What are the real differences, and how is the recession impacting on both forms of protection provision?
Anyone who reads Professor Chris Kemp’s biography – and I recommend that you do – can be left in little doubt that, when it comes to event management, this chap holds both the practical experience and academic qualifications that underpin his appointment as executive dean of the Faculty of Enterprise and Innovation at Buckinghamshire New University.
At The Security Institute’s Annual Conference, he’ll be presenting his unique take on career path development, no doubt emphasising the role that his own establishment is playing in the launch of Security Week during the month of September.
Delegate package and booking details
The delegate package for the event includes admission to the two-day conference, excellent networking opportunities, access to all exhibitors, the list of attendees and contact details, conference papers (where they have been provided by speakers), luncheon on arrival and refreshments throughout and the informal BBQ meal on the evening of 8 September.
Delegate numbers are limited. Already, over one third of the places have been allocated. For details of how to book, contact Steve Wood – the Institute’s events and finance assistant – on (telephone) 08453 707717, or send an e-mail: [email protected]
Missenden Abbey: book your stay at the venue
With superb views of the nearby Chilterns, Missenden Abbey offers a quality conference venue. Devastated by fire in 1985, the gutted interior was subsequently renovated and restored before being bought by Buckinghamshire New University in the mid-1990s.
Accommodation at the Abbey is priced at GB pound 50 per head (plus VAT) for all Institute delegates. Send an e-mail to: [email protected] and they’ll contact you.
For those travelling by public transport, train services run from London Marylebone to Great Missenden every half an hour. The journey takes around 40 minutes. The Metropolitan Line from Baker Street to Amersham takes 35 minutes, followed by a four-mile taxi ride. The choice is yours, Ladies and Gentlemen!
SMT Online will be in attendance as always, and we look forward to seeing you there
