Eruma appoints General Sir Alistair Irwin as strategic adviser

General Sir Alistair Irwin KCB CBE MA FCMI FInstCPD boasts over 35 years of military experience, culminating his career as Adjutant General – the Army Board member responsible for all personnel matters throughout the British Army.

Irwin’s extensive operational and managerial experience includes a term serving as General Officer commanding Northern Ireland as well as numerous other appointments involving direct communication with ministers, senior officers and top military and civilian officials around the world.

During his career, Sir Alistair has dealt with the highest levels of Government and has worked in close co-operation with the police service, the security services and other organisations on a range of issues. His broad expertise ranges from strategic planning and Human Resources through to international relations and equipment procurement.

The Black Watch in Northern Ireland

Irwin joined The Black Watch in 1970 after graduating from St Andrew’s University in Political Economy. He’s the third generation of his family to have served in the Regiment in modern times. His military career took him to many parts of the world and often to Northern Ireland. He commanded 1st Battalion The Black Watch in Northern Ireland, Edinburgh and West Berlin.

General Irwin is chairman of The Christina Mary Hendrie Trust and Honorary Colonel of Tayforth Universities Officer Training Corps. He’s a member of the Royal Company of Archers (Queen’s Bodyguard for Scotland), and an occasional lecturer on international relations and leadership. Irwin is a published author on military theory and history, and has written book reviews for The Spectator magazine.

Sir Alistair currently serves as president of the Royal British Legion (Scotland), Veterans Scotland, the Earl Haig Fund for Scotland and the Officer’s Association. He’s also a member of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and chairman of its Audit Committee.
